Custom Recovery for the Huawei Ascend Y210

Device manufacturers, including PC, notebook and tablet makers, install recovery images within their products enabling consumers to recover from hardware and software faults. Smartphones are no exception and thanks to the developer community, software is available to override the Y210's recovery, install a custom operating system and several other options.

HiSuite Android Manager

CAUTION
The process of installing a custom recovery involves the risk of permanently bricking your device, introducing bugs and/or damaging your hardware. It will also void the manufacturer's warranty. Proceed at your own risk.

STEP 1
Download and install Huawei's HiSuite Android Manager. This will install the smartphone's PC drivers and useful software to manage contacts, photos ect. If you are familiar with driver installation, you can download the
Huawei ADB Drivers only. When done, restart your PC.

ClockWorkMod Recovery

STEP 2
The custom recovery software we will use for the Y210 is ClockWorkMod Recovery and since its RomManager app is incompatible with the Y210's OS, we will use the OneClickInstall method. Download and extract the contents of the ZIP archive to your PC.

STEP 3
Go into your phone's settings menu and make sure USB debugging is enabled under Apps. Plug your USB cable to the device and PC. In the CWM OneClick Install folder, right click on the file named AA51-Oneclick CWM.bat and select Run As Administrator. Once the ClockWorkMod recovery install process is finished, your device will reboot.

STEP 4 (Very Important)
The first thing to do after a custom recovery install is to make a backup copy of your stock firmware. It will allow you to revert back to the manufacturer firmware in case of problems or if you decide to sell your hardware.

Power off your device. Hold down both the volume UP and POWER buttons until you enter the ClockWorkMod recovery screen. Using the volume UP/DOWN toggle, scroll to backup and restore and press the POWER button to select.

From the next screen, select backup and let the process complete itself. When done, select reboot system now. A backup copy of your firmware will have been saved to your microSD card under the ClockWorkMod folder. For good measure, make one or several copies of this backup to your PC, USB drives and/or CD/DVD in case of microSD failure.
